Casement windows for North Texas homes
Casement windows are hinged on the side and crank outward, like a door. They open fully to catch a breeze and press tight against the frame when closed.
- Best for
- Kitchens & over-the-sink spots
- Relative cost
How it works
How casement windows work
A crank handle at the bottom swings the sash out on its hinges. When you close it, the sash presses into weatherstripping on all four sides, which makes casements one of the tightest-sealing windows that open.
Why homeowners choose them
- The whole sash opens for maximum airflow
- Seals tightly on all four sides when closed
- Easy to open over a sink or counter with a crank
- Clean, modern sightlines
Good to know
- The sash swings outward, so it needs clearance from walkways and patios.
- Cranks and hinges add parts compared with a slider or hung window.
Where they fit
Where casement windows work best
- Kitchens, over the sink
- Hard-to-reach spots
- Beside picture windows
- Modern and contemporary homes
In North Texas homes
Casements are a favorite over kitchen sinks in DFW homes, where reaching across a counter to lift a sash is awkward. Opened toward North Texas's usual southerly breeze, a casement scoops air into the room on mild spring and fall days.
What they cost
More than hung windows or sliders, for the crank and hinge hardware.
Size, glass and installation matter as much as style. See our window replacement cost guide.

Casement windows: common questions

Are casement windows more energy efficient than sliders?
Casements usually seal tighter because the sash presses into the frame on all four sides. The glass package still matters most; see the energy-efficient windows guide.
Where does the screen go on a casement window?
Inside. Because the sash opens outward, the screen sits on the interior side of the window.
Can a casement replace my kitchen slider?
Usually, yes. We'll measure the opening and check the outside clearance so the sash can swing freely.
