Single-hung windows for North Texas homes
Single-hung windows are the most common window in North Texas homes, and usually the best value. The bottom sash slides up for fresh air while the top sash stays fixed, so there are fewer moving parts and a tighter seal.

How it works
How single-hung windows work
A single-hung window has two sashes in one frame. Only the lower sash moves: it slides up on a spring balance and locks to the meeting rail. Because the top sash is fixed and sealed into the frame, there is less room for air to leak than in designs where both sashes move.
Why homeowners choose them
- Lowest installed cost of any window that opens
- Fewer moving parts to wear out
- A fixed, fully sealed top sash
- Fits the openings in most 1970s–2000s DFW homes
Good to know
- You can't clean the outside of the top pane from indoors. On a second floor, a double-hung may be worth the upgrade.
- Only the bottom half opens, so airflow is half the window.

In North Texas homes
Most tract homes built across Plano, Garland, Mesquite and Arlington from the 1970s through the 2000s came with aluminum single-hungs. Swapping them for vinyl single-hungs keeps the familiar look and the same opening size, which keeps the project simple and affordable.

What's the difference between single-hung and double-hung windows?
On a single-hung window only the bottom sash moves. On a double-hung, both sashes move and usually tilt in for cleaning. Single-hungs cost less and have one fewer sash to seal; double-hung windows are easier to clean on upper floors.
Are single-hung windows energy efficient?
Yes. Energy performance comes mostly from the glass and frame, not the style. A vinyl single-hung with Low-E glass can meet ENERGY STAR guidelines in every DFW county; our energy-efficient windows guide shows the numbers to look for.
Do single-hung windows qualify for the 10 windows from $5,000 offer?
Yes. Standard-size white vinyl single-hung windows are exactly what the offer covers. The offer terms list the size limits.
