Sliding windows for North Texas homes
Sliding windows glide side to side on a track. With no sash to lift, they're easy to open, which makes them a favorite for wide openings, spots over counters and ranch homes.
- Best for
- Wide openings & ranch homes
- Relative cost
How it works
How sliding windows work
A sash slides horizontally past a fixed pane on rollers that keep it moving smoothly, and a latch locks it to the frame. Wider openings can use a three-panel slider, with a fixed center pane and a sliding panel on each side.
Why homeowners choose them
- Easy to open, with nothing to lift
- Wide, uninterrupted views
- A simple design with few parts to fail
- Good value for wide openings
Good to know
- Tracks collect dust and need an occasional vacuum.
- On a two-panel slider, only half the window opens at a time.
Where they fit
Where sliding windows work best
- Ranch homes
- Wide living-room openings
- Over kitchen counters
- Wide, short openings
In North Texas homes
Aluminum sliders were standard on the 1960s–80s homes of Richardson, Garland and Mesquite, and many now have worn rollers and bent tracks. A vinyl slider fits the same opening, glides easily and seals far better.

Sliding windows: common questions

Are sliding windows as energy efficient as hung windows?
Modern vinyl sliders with Low-E glass perform well. Glass, frame and installation quality matter far more than the style; see our energy-efficient windows guide.
How do I keep a sliding window gliding smoothly?
Vacuum the track and wipe it clean a few times a year. If it still drags, a silicone spray made for windows helps. Avoid oil, which attracts dust.
Are sliders included in the $5,000 offer?
Yes. Standard-size white vinyl sliders are covered alongside single-hungs. The offer terms have the details.
